The Independent Taxi Training Company (ITTCo) was established to enable people in Cardiff and the surrounding areas to learn how to join the taxi trade, providing top class training by utilising expert knowledge of both Cardiff and surrounding areas whilst also ensuring the required qualifications are obtainable.

Qualification

The SQA Level 2 Certificate in Introduction to the Role of the Professional Taxi and Private Hire Driver is designed to develop, the knowledge of prospective or existing drivers.

Practical Disability Applications

A specifically designed practical unit which raises awareness of the differing types of disabilities your passengers may present. We focus on ensuring that your service is accessible to all.

Detailed Knowledge

Our team have extensive local knowledge, built up over the last 18 years, to share with prospective taxi drivers allowing them to successfully pass the required local council knowledge tests.

Successful Pass Rate

Our team have successfully trained over 1,000 drivers during the last 13 years (10 at a previous training facility) with a first time pass rate exceeding 90%!

Where are we based?

We are currently located in The Beacon Centre in Harrison Drive, St. Mellons (CF3 0PJ).
The centre provides top class facilities to enable the delivery of training, ample car parking space, on site cafeteria and is easily accessible from A48 and M4.

What do I need to become a taxi driver?
To become a taxi driver in Cardiff, you will need to meet the following criteria:

  • Hold a current UK/EU driving licence, which has been held for over 12 months;
  • Be over the age of 21;
  • Pass 2 tests - Regulatory Qualification (UK wide) & Local Knowledge (where applicable);
  • Pass a medical exam and DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) check;
  • Understand basic written and spoken English.
Level 2 Certificate in Introduction to the Role of the Professional Taxi and Private Hire Driver. This is a mandatory qualification required by most councils throughout the UK to allow you to become a taxi driver.

Knowledge – A local knowledge test which is broken down into two parts (written & oral). The exams will test your knowledge of the local area of Cardiff. They will also test your knowledge of the rules and regulations of the taxi trade, specific to the local city council. To ensure you can pass these exams, we run a ‘Knowledge School’ to teach you all you need to know.
The course is delivered one day per week. If taken as a combined course (qualification and knowledge), the course will last approximately 15 weeks. The first 3 weeks will be dedicated to the Regulatory Qualification element with the following 10-12 weeks focussed on increasing your knowledge of Cardiff.

If you have chosen the FastTrack course, the Level 2 Qualification is delivered over a 5 day course (including Exams). If resits are required, we will arrange these around your circumstances. The costs of Units resits are £25 per unit resit.

We recommend that you call to arrange a session where we can talk you through the course, what would be expected of you and to allow us to answer any queries you may have before you commit to attend the training. We typically run induction sessions at the centre on a Monday afternoon at 13:00 but will accomodate where required.

When attending an information session, we will require a £25 deposit if you wish to book on the next course.

Steve has over 10 years’ experience in training obtained through one of the largest private hire companies in South Wales, Premier Taxis. During this time, Steve has helped over 1,000 people qualify to become a taxi driver in Cardiff.
